The variety of items and ease of purchase on Amazon is second-to-none, as a centralized marketplace. Yet one consistent denominator across current platforms is participant adherence to hosting-specified transaction types. The same hyper-focus and specialist boxing as with Uber and Airbnb;
- Only certain content can be set within platform defined, required listing specifications which necessarily funnels and subsumes certain diversity by forcing any offering(s) only to or within prefabricated, established and popularized formats;
- Comparative valuations and choice selection may be purely quantified by the host-platform used and, as such, are themselves set to, be they accurate or arbitrary, transactional and fulfillment details which are also typically recorded through the same host;
- Providers or services that may have derived benefits or profits from now un-measured and intangible metrics can become scored or quantified on impersonal platform-level analytics, such as only engagement speed and volume;
- A standardization of independent-provider listing types, advertising and valuations that are based on aggregated quantitative consumption feedback can de-personalize highly variable and hugely influential subjective selection factors. Improper or even top-down standardization of independent-provider capacity can lead to the lessening of consumer choice, a limiting of individual production choice and efficiency and with these, consequent financial ramifications.
